Lundsgaard was declared in 1768 to be an entailed estate, meaning that the property could not be divided, sold or borrowed against, only inherited in its entirety. At that time, the estate was owned by the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig family, who also became the counts of Langeland in 1832.

The manor house was built in 1765. Since the owners lived for the most part on Langeland, Lundsgaard was leased out.
The limitations on Lundsgaard's status (as an entailed estate) were lifted in 1927, and in 1939 it was sold to the Master of the Royal Hunt, Hans Iuel. His family still owns the estate, along with the outlying forests and coastline along the Great Belt.
